Flocking
The Flocking fundraiser works like this. You start with a bunch of plastic flamingo yard ornaments on the lawn of the church (or in a side yard if the trustees get a little anxious about that sort of thing). You announce to the congregation (it's great if you can get some of your youth to read it dramatically during the announcements) that a flock of flamingos has invaded your town/city and that there is a possibility they may wander from yard to yard. Offer "Insurance" to the congregation to prevent the flamingos from entering their yard, and they can also make a donation to have the flamingos sent to someone else's yard. Once someone has been "FLOCKED" they can make a donation to have the flamingos removed, or they can make a slightly larger donation to have the flamingos sent on to another yard of their choosing. You can determine how much you want to ask for, or open it up to donations. We asked for a minimum $15 donation for insurance and/or flamingo remove and $20 to flock another person. We had some people who could only give$5 and others who gave $150! Every little bit helped. Since we had 20plastic flamingos of varying sizes, we split them into 2 flocks of 10.We had 4 adult drivers who took the flamingos around and picked them up.We ended up having such a great response, we were doing this almost 3x a week! We tracked the progress of the flamingos on a map at the church and also on our website. Several people from the community that didn't even attend our church asked about it and a couple even started attending the church after they were flocked by a friend, so it was a great (albeit unusual!) evangelism tool. A few caveats ... be aware of concerned neighbors. We had a few that yelled at us until we explained what we were doing. Also, if you do this in an area with really rocky soil or tough clay, bring some water with you to soften the soil. Otherwise, you may have flamingos reclining in the yard, rather than upright. Also, plan to have some extended time after you stop selling the insurance and taking flocking orders ... it can go on forever!Since I know how long it can take to put together material for a fundraiser, I've gathered the info we used. Feel free to take it, copy it, modify it, USE it however you can. -
